Intensive monitoring of the critical point 01 Bala within the “Monitoring the environmental impact of the works regarding the improvement of the navigation conditions on the Danube river between Calarasi and Braila, km 375-175” project |
This page will be permanently updated |
OBJECTIVE:
1) Comparative analysis of the results of numerical modelling of the Danube flow at different levels (for initial phase and the 3rd phase of execution of bottom sill on Bala branch) and the results obtained in the field by daily measurements in different sections of control.
2) Determining the speed of sturgeon above the bottom sill on Bala branch.
PURPOSE: In order to prevent possible misunderstandings of the hydrological phenomena and sturgeons’ migration, a new monitoring and alarming system has been implemented.

Therefore, beside the monitoring activity of the environmental biotic and abiotic parameters (according to contract no. 53/2011) an additional investigation, carried out in emergency regime of the following parameters has been made:
A) Monitored parameters according to the next table:
Continuous measurements | Quasi-continuous measurements |
-water turbidity -water salinity -water temperature -water level -detection of sturgeons migration |
-velocity of water flow -discharge -bathymetry -water surface level -x, y, z coordinates of monitoring devices |
B) Determination of reception areas of the ultrasonic emitters placed within sturgeons’ body (still implementing)
C) Determination of sturgeons’ movement velocity in the area of Bala bottom sill (this will be implemented after the obtaining of the scientific fishing authorization)*
D) Checking activity of the hydrological parameters before and after the accomplishment of the bottom sill- Phase III, Bala (in the first part of September)
E) Checking of the forecasts accomplished through the numerical simulation and comparative analysis (result of the 3D numerical model- in situ measurements (September)
The accomplishment steps to ensure the success of the intensive monitoring activity are:
- Accomplishment of the Control Center at km 9,5 Bala

- Assurance of a register on the entire intensive monitoring period for emergency situations
- Creation, elaboration and implementation of some web pages to ensure the transparency
- Installation of control topo- landmarks in the areas of interest correlated to the geometry of numerical models
- Intensive monitoring plan
- Assurance of measurements’ quality through double control
- Written responsibility of the teams on the special importance of activities
- On-site control plan
Expected results:
- 3D Model audit and recalibration
- Assurance of a high confidence level of the future forecast results of the 3D numerical models for the entire geometry of Bala bottom sill
- Determination - with an assumed reliability - of sturgeons’ movement velocity in natural conditions, on Bala (especially at bottom sill)
- Highlighting sturgeons’ migration routes in the investigated area
- Maps containing sturgeons’ migration routes in the investigated areas
- Decisional analysis on sturgeons’ migrating possibility according to the final geometry of bottom sill, Bala branch
- Preventive solutions proposals to eliminate/decrease any risk impact on the aquatic or terrestrial environment.
Obtained results:
The synthetic situation of the measurements carried out by the detached teams is presented below:

The aerial image of the monitoring area is being presented as well as the sections on which the intensive monitoring is being carried out. You may click the names of the monitored sections to view the historic of the measurements as well as the results of 3D models for these sections.
